Winnie says: When we moved our winter home over here to Mesa, AZ from Oceanside, CA my friend and long ago bartender at the Wabasha Legion in the 70s named John, who lives just down the street always wanted to ride on the back of my Ultra. Although, according to my son, it's not the coolest thing to do we had a good time. John asked me one day way back in 1979 while pouring me a drink at the Legion-- which was right next door to the radio station, why my family was leaving me. I said "she thinks I'm some kind of alcoholic". He said "BS! If you're an alcoholic I know I'm one" A year later after using his car to shove his wife's car through the opposite wall of the garage (intentionally)... he happily joined our sober outfit too and last drank in 1980! In mid December '07 he said lets stop at that Kawasaki shop we were riding by........after much head and butt scratching-he bought a bike!! He hadn't ridden for 25 years and I rode it home for him..... but not until after I had nervously watched him wiggle and jiggle and tippily turn too close to concrete barriers as he practiced riding in an empty parking lot for an hour! That was just before Christmas....he didn't ride it again for several days so I thought 'well that idea is out the window'! He eventually got back on and rode the side streets fairly well. Then one day he said he got his written license.....wow! I thought.... so we rode endlessly up and down streets where he was legal, but not on any highways. Finally he got the road test finished and away we went....he has improved ever since. One day I asked him if he ever saw the movie Wild Hogs. Not being an avid moviegoer he said 'No'. We rented it and he loved it. A few days after that he said 'maybe we should take a little road trip like the Wild Hogs!'..... Imagine.... all that from wobbly wobbly only a couple months earlier. I said "Nothing doing....we need to have a name before we do that!!!!-what name do ya like" He said 'I don't care"....I already have a camel pin on my vest....so we started out with Camels because we want to ride dry.....so we thought about 'camel cruisers', 'camel herders' and who knows what else until I said "man we gotta be wild like the Hogs!!" There it was... "The Wild Camels". We did our first road trip to California last weekend to see my son and family and hit some meetings to visit old AA pals. We put on 1100 miles in just a few days and John road the 6 lanes on the I-5 after dark and was always stuck right there in my right rearview. Were in not for a bit of rear 'axle' fatigue we would still be going. Several places people would chuckle at our name, but would be very respectful when we told them why it is what it is....Our membership doubled the first day we sent out the link to the website but there already is lots of interest across the U.S. and even in Europe. We just started it for ourselves but then again so did Bill and Bob huh Who knows what'll happen....it just needs to stay fun, simple, and sober!
